DeBary’s National Night Out Returned, Strong Community Support & Safety Focus

Special to the Herald

Residents of DeBary recently gathered at City Hall for the City’s first National Night Out event since 2019, marking the return of a popular community tradition. The event fostered engagement between residents and local first responders, promoting public safety awareness and safety skills.

Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood, Orange City Fire Chief Ronnie Long, and all DeBary Council members were in attendance, further reinforcing the partnership between the City and first responders. DeBary's National Night Out was the only event this year held in partnership with the Volusia Sheriff's Office.

"We are proud to host National Night Out once again and to be recognized as the safest city in Volusia County,” stated Mayor Chasez. "Events like this strengthen our connection with residents and first responders, promoting the small-town community feel that we all love about DeBary."

Throughout the evening, attendees had the opportunity to explore life-saving equipment and witness demonstrations by the Volusia Sheriff's Office and Orange City Fire Department. Residents interacted with K-9 units, observed the Volusia County Sheriff's motorcycles in action, and watched an extrication demonstration. Additionally, hands-on experiences taught attendees how to extinguish home fires and other crucial safety techniques.

This year’s National Night Out also featured hot dogs provided by the DeBary Volunteer Firemen's Association, food trucks offering sweet treats, and face painting.

The City of DeBary contracts its law enforcement services with the Volusia Sheriff's Office, providing 24-hour service with 22 sworn personnel. The City contracts fire services with the Orange City Fire Department, serving Orange City since 1890 and DeBary since 2009.
