It was a successful start to regional play for Seminole County girls volleyball programs as five of the eight entries recorded victories in Regional Quarterfinal action on Tuesday and Wednesday.
All three District Champions _ Lake Brantley (20-5), Orangewood Christian (22-4) and Oviedo (21-5) _ won handily at home, while At Large teams Hagerty (14-9) and Altamonte Christian (14-8) were also triumphant in their initial efforts.
In fact, Lake Mary Prep (11-6) was the only local team to lose to an out of area squad, as Lake Howell (17-10) and The Geneva School (10-13) fell to Oviedo and Altamonte Christian, respectively.
Tuesday night action saw No. 5 seeded Altamonte Christian traveling to Casselberry and outlasting No. 4 seeded The Geneva School, 3-2, and host No. 3 Lake Mary Prep getting upset by No. 6 Merritt Island Christian (11-12), 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-18 and 25-17), despite big matches from junior Maddey Cruse (22 kills, 3 service aces, 1 block, 10 digs and 4 assists), senior Maren Emerton (1 service ace, 4 digs and 10 assists) and junior Phallyn Lefever (7 kills, 1 block, 3 digs and 2 assists) in Class 1A-Region 1A Quarterfinals, and No. 2 seeded Orangewood Christian, which advanced to the Class 2A Final 4 last year, eased past No. 7 seeded The First Academy-Orlando (4-15), 3-1 (14-25, 25-21, 25-7 and 25-14), led by sophomore twins, Kennedy Langmo (19 kills, 25 digs and 2 assists) and Kaleigh Langmo (14 kills, 5 service aces, 10 digs, 3 assists and 1 block), senior Robyn Stephens (22 assists, 2 service aces, 9 digs and 2 kills) and sophomore Avery Herman (15 assists, 1 service ace and 5 digs).
The larger classification schools took to the court on Wednesday and it was a night of sweeps, led by No. 2 seeded Oviedo over No. 7 Lake Howell, 3-0 (25-10, 25-10 and 25-21), in Class 6A-Region 1 behind senior Rylee Yarborough (12 kills, 1 service ace and 12 digs), sophomore Autumn Westphall (7 kills and 2 digs), junior Jordin Ndiaye (7 kills and 1 block), senior Olivia Klimis (5 kills, 3 service aces, 5 digs and 22 assists), Delaney Sloane (1 service ace, 4 digs and 17 assists) and junior Avery Stephens (16 digs and 1 assist).
In Class 7A-Region 1, it was No. 3 seeded Lake Brantley outscoring No. 6 seeded Jacksonville-Mandarin (19-6), 3-0 (25-20, 25-21 and 25-16), led by Amina N’diaye (20 kills and 11 digs), London Adkins (12 kills, 1 block and 1 assist), Andie Bowron (2 kills, 2 service aces, 1 blocks, 4 digs and 45 assists) and Ryan Jomo (12 digs) and No. 4 seeded Hagerty outlasting No. 5 seeded St. Johns-Creekside (15-6), 3-0 (25-19, 25-20 and 25-17), led by Mikayla Miessler (17 kills and 9 digs), Jenness Orcutt (12 kills, 2 service aces and 11 digs), Brielle Mullen (2 kills, 3 service aces, 40 assists and 15 digs), Allyson Leach (20 digs and 2 assists) and Samiya Bolton (8 kills, 1 service ace and 8 digs).
All five winners will be in action today (Saturday) in Regional Semifinals and the Regional Finals will be held in Class 1A and 2A on Tuesday and Class 6A and 7A on Wednesday.
