Special to the Herald
Florida Retired Teachers' Day is celebrated on the Sunday that begins the third week of November each year. The Governor of Florida issues a proclamation each year to designate the day and to encourage the public to honor retired teachers.
The date was chosen because it precedes National Education Week, which begins on the third Monday of November.
The history of Florida Retired Teachers' Day includes:
• 1979 - Fay M. Milton, a member of the Florida Retired Educators Association (FREA), began the process to create Florida Retired Teachers' Day.
• 1980 - Governor Bob Graham issued a proclamation for the third Sunday in October as Florida Retired Teachers' Day.
• 1981 - Governor Graham signed a law making the third Sunday in November Florida Retired Teachers' Day.
