The 3-time defending Class 3A State Champion Lee Mary High School girls golf team, under Head Coach Dennis Burchill, moved into a prime position for a ‘4-Pete’ with a dominating performance in winning the Class 3A-Region 1 Tournament at Hawkstone Country Club in Gainesville on Tuesday.
The Rams won by 15-strokes _ 287-to-302 _ over Beachside High School from St. Johns led by Low-Medalist Ryleigh Knaub, who shot a 65 to win by two strokes, and Mara King, who posted a 70 to tie for third overall.
Individually, Lake Brantley’s Bretton Mackiewicz shot a 77 to finish tied for 13th overall, but that was good enough for to earn one of the 16 available spots for players not on a qualifying team.
In Girls Class 1A-Region 2, Circle Christian and Lake Mary Prep finished fourth and sixth, respectively, at Seven Springs Golf & Country Club in New Port Richey on Tuesday, but their scores were low enough to earn an invitation to the Class 1A State Championship.
Things did not go as well in the Boys’ Tournaments on Monday as multi-time Champion Lake Mary High was a distant eighth place in the Class 3A-Region 1 event at Hawkstone. Fortunately for the Rams, their score was still good enough to get them a spot in the Class 3A State Championships.
It was better on the Class 1A-Region 2 Tournament at Seven Springs as Circle Christian had an outstanding scoring day of 1-under par-287 to tie Windermere Prep for team honors led by Sophomore Orlando Torres with a score of 3-under par-69 and Freshman Karl Stenson with a 2-under par-70.
For State Seeding purposes, the teams met in a playoff with Windermere Prep claiming the overall title.
The Lake Mary Prep boys also qualified for state with a fifth place finish, but Trinity Prep, which finished seventh, did not.
The FHSAA State Golf Championships will be held from November 12-thru-November 20 at Mission Resort + Club in Howey-in-the-Hills.
The Class 1A State Championships will be next Tuesday and Wednesday _ Nov. 12-13 _ and the Class 3A finals are Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 19-20.
