Sandfordite, Josiah Hidayat, a freshman at Seminole High School, loves video games, playing the piano, anime and music but it’s his faith and mission work that is his real passion.

Having Indonesian parents, Hidayat learned various cultures at an early age.

“I was drawn to volunteer at Ethnos 360because I admire the work of missionaries who dedicate their lives spreading the gospel,” he said. “I want to give back in any way I can as a way to show my gratitude to the members of Ethnos 360, whose positive influence has given me a deeper understanding of my faith. I am passionate about my faith and that is why the missionaries have my utmost respect as they dedicate their life to spreading the gospel.”

Hidayat cited that he was attracted to volunteering with Ethnos 360 because it gives him a chance to give back to an organization that has done so much for him so he wants to dedicate his time supporting the missionaries who he has utmost respect for.

One of the greatest rewards volunteering with Ethnos 360 is hearing stories from retirees about their time as a missionary because it brings a smile to his face.

“The easiest thing for me as a volunteer is socializing with the missionaries,” said Hidayat. “When I have no duties and there are missionaries having a conversation, I like to listen and join in. I enjoy hearing about the stories they have and the wisdom they bring forth.”

In regard to stories Hidayat also added that Josiah was one of the greatest kings in the Bible. He loves hearing about that great king from one of the older gentlemen when he told him that his own name is Josiah.

Yet, there are some challenging issues too with his kitchen volunteerism. Although, he did receive food safety training and is diligent to ensure he is squeaky clean, cautious and not contaminate the food.

“The hardest thing for me about being a volunteer is doing everything in a timely manner,” he shared. “When I first arrive in the kitchen, I’m in charge of making the coffee for the upcoming coffee break. Once I took a little too long to set up the coffee and a few retirees left thinking there was none. I’ve improved now to the point that the coffee is nearly always on time and it just came with practice.”

As far as defining moments that confirm he is doing what he is called to do, Hidayat said, “There’s one lady that every time I serve her food or drinks she is appreciative and beyond grateful. She always says ‘thank you so much for being here’ and that she really appreciates me being there every Saturday. It definitely brings a smile to my face and pays for all the work I do.”

He continued by saying, “I plan on volunteering for months, if not years, to come. Every time I volunteer at Ethnos 360 I feel gratification as I get to help somewhere I really care about. I also love hearing the wisdom of missionaries. I’d love to tell others, don’t be afraid to ask if you have any questions regarding anything at any time whatsoever and thank you to the Mandas and Ethnos 360.”
