SANFORD — The Central Florida Soap Box Derby family keeps coming through.
The City of Sanford Parks and Recreation Department and Central Florida Soap Box Derby held one of its most popular events _ the ANNUAL TOYS-FOR-TOTS Rally _ on Saturday, November 2, at Mike Kirby Park.
And once again, the fans, racers and family came through with an amazingly large and impressive array of donations for the United States Marine Corps Reserves Toys-For-Tots program.
The day began under beautiful conditions, but by lunch time scattered showers started to dot the area, but only minor problems with precipitation were encountered as a great time was enjoyed by all.
The competition was very tight and it was pretty amazing that two drivers _ Haley Hoagey in the Stock Division and Ayva David in the Super Stock Division _ actually won both races in their classes on the day.
It was definitely a tale of two races in the Stock Division.
While Haley Hoagey went undefeated on the day, others were fighting tooth-and-nail behind her with Madison Taylor finishing second in the AM Double Elimination race ahead of Adarsh Koneru.
In the PM Single Elimination race there was a reversal of fortunes as Charlie Holiday, who finished eighth in the AM Double, jumped all the way up to the Runners-up spot in the afternoon, with Koneru again completing the podium, while Maddison Taylor dropped to a sixth place finish.
The AM Double Elimination race in the Super Stock Division saw four familiar faces at the top of the standings with Ayva David topping Alexa Mello, former World Champion Samantha Hoagey and Aliviya Mello.
But things got mixed up behind David in the PM Single Elimination race as Aliviya Mello jumped up to second place, while Isaac Pickels moved up from fifth in the AM to third place and Maggie Soucey was fourth after placing seventh in the morning.
There was a very interesting result in the Masters Division AM Double Elimination race.
In last year’s Toys for Tots PM Single Elimination race, Kira Hart and Bryce Sykes decided to step out of their regular Stock and Super Stock cars to take test runs in new Masters cars.
Now in 2024, the duo advanced all the way to the ‘if necessary’ race _ both drivers with one loss _ and it was Hart edging Bryce Sykes in the final with last year’s AM champion, Corey Walker, finishing third.
In the PM Single Elimination race it was veteran Brianna Scallatino repeating her 2023 PM Single win over Walker, while former full time competitor Rylee Scala making a rare appearance and placing third.
Next up is another of the most popular events on the CFSBD calendar, especially with out of state competitors, as they will head to Mike Kirby Park to close out 2024 when The City of Sanford Parks and Recreation Department and Central Florida Soap Box Derby hosts the 2-Day Holiday Rally on Saturday, December 28, and Sunday, December 29.
The entry fee, if registration and fee is received before Saturday, December 7, is $90 for one entry and $165 for two-or-more siblings for both days.
After December 7, is $115 for one entry or $200 total for a family of two or more drivers.
The final day to enter and pay in full is Thursday, December 19. No onsite registration.
Kirby Park will be open on Friday, December 27, from 10 a.m.-to-2 p.m. for trailer drop-off.
RV’s are welcome, but you MUST make prior arrangements with the Rally Director.
Each Day, check in will be at 7 a.m., with racing beginning at 8:30 a.m., and will consist of a Double Elimination race for each class in the morning, followed by a lunch break and a Single Elimination race for each class in the afternoon.
Soap Box Derby racing is open to children ages 7 to 20 _ Stock, 7-to-13; Super Stock, 9-to-18; Masters, 10-to-20 _ with a limited number of loaner cars available for new participants.
Everyone, especially interested non-racers, is invited to attend any of the family friendly events, free of charge, at beautiful Mike Kirby Park located on the west side of Sanford on Oregon Avenue, north off of CR-46A (25th Street/H. E. Thomas Parkway) or east off of Rinehart Road, just south of the GreeneWay entry. The track is East of Bentley Elementary School.
