Investigation into Officer-Involved Shooting on Florida Boulevard on Christmas Day Still Ongoing

On December 25, 2024, at approximately 10:43 a.m., officers from the Altamonte Springs Police Department responded to a call for service on the 700 block of Florida Blvd.

The caller advised her husband, Stephen Scherer, demonstrated concerning behavior the night before and requested an escort inside the residence to pick up Christmas gifts.

Although the family did not believe Scherer was inside, officers discovered he had locked himself in a bedroom. They in structed the family member to leave the resi dence and began communicating with Scherer, attempting to persuade him to come outside.

During the encounter, Scherer broke through a window while holding a handgun and moved toward other family members who were standing outside. Officers issued loud verbal commands, urging him to drop the weapon, and a secondary officer deployed his Taser in an effort to de-escalate the situation through less-lethal means.

Despite these efforts, Scherer ignored the commands and turned toward his wife while raising the firearm. In response, an of ficer and a deputy with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office who was assisting, discharged their weapons. Officers immediately rendered medical aid to Scherer, who was transported to a local hospital for treat ment of his injuries. Scherer is facing the charge of Aggravated Assault on a Law En forcement Officer. The Altamonte Springs Police Department requested the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to respond.

The officer involved was placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
