James Charles Caldwell, 52, of Longwood, was arrested on Saturday, March 28 in Sanford at a No Kings Protest in Sanford.
According to police records, officers responded to the intersection of Sanford Avenue and 1st Street regarding a disturbance. The No Kings Protest group and two opposition parties were present.
The report added that Caldwell, who was part of the No Kings group, was seen continuously placing a sign in front of a woman's face while a loud exchange was taking place.
As officers witnessed the encounter they warned both parties to respect each other’s space and maintain peace. Police remained in the area to monitor the heated verbal exchange.
They observed Caldwell taking his sign and slapping it on the back of the woman’s head.
The incident was captured on body-worn camera and the woman shared that she had a recording.
After detainment, Caldwell was arrested on battery charges and transported to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility.
