UCF SOFTBALL

   Anything could happen.

The UCF softball team played Ellie Goulding’s 2012 release in the moments following their Tallahassee Regional-opening win over Jacksonville State Friday afternoon.

The song served as the ambiance on the team bus after the Knights earned a convincing 10-1 run-rule Saturday victory over Stetson to clinch a spot in the Regional Final.

And Sunday afternoon, rather than succumbing to discouragement following a narrow 2-1 defeat to the host No. 9 overall seed Florida State Seminoles, the Knights instead pressed play once again on their song of the weekend in between games.

Led by a remarkable performance in the circle by Payne, the Knights authored one of the biggest wins, if not the biggest win, in program history, knocking off the Seminoles in game two of the teams’ Sunday twin bill, 4-2, to clinch the second NCAA Super Regional appearance in program history.

With its second Regional Championship under its belt, UCF traveled to California to take part in the Best of 3 Los Angeles Super Regional against powerful and red-hot UCLA (52-8) and were swept out of the tournament and finish the season with a 41-19-1 record and a tie for ninth in the nation.

The first game went pear-shaped in a hurry. Through three innings, the only hit in the game was a leadoff home run by UCLA in the second inning. UCF got an Aubrey Evans double to lead off the fourth, but she was stranded on third.

A pair of hit batters, a sacrifice bunt, RBI ground out and RBI double in the bottom of the fourth gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead, but Sierra Humphries hit a lead off home run in the fifth for the Knights.

In the bottom of the fifth, a pair of hit batters, a home run, a single, a walk and another 3-run homer and the game ended by the Run Rule, 9-1.

Evans led off game two with a home run, but walks again plagued UCF as they helped the Bruins build a 6-1 lead.

The Knights had a big fourth inning, scoring three runs and leaving the bases loaded as they cut the deficit to 6-4.

But UCLA would not go away, belting a pair of 3-run home runs and a solo shot, giving them a national record 200 home runs on the season, to score eight unanswered runs to win, 14-4.

   Here is the schedule:

Friday, May 22

   Game 1 _ UCLA 9, UCF 1, 5-innings.

Saturday, May 23

   Game 2 _ UCLA 14, UCF 4.

VALKYRIES MAKE COACHING CHANGE

The Orlando Valkyries and head coach Amy Pauly have mutually agreed to part ways, Valkyries President Erik Nilsen announced.

Pauly concludes her tenure in Orlando after three seasons at the helm, highlighted by guiding the Valkyries to a championship in 2025.

“We would like to thank Amy for all of the incredible contributions she has made to this city, as well as bringing home a championship in 2025,” said Nilsen. “We appreciate the many sacrifices and all the hard work she has put in since being named the inaugural head coach in 2023. We wish her nothing but the best as we move into a new era of Valkyries volleyball.”

Pauly was named the organization’s first head coach on June 19, 2023, ahead of the team’s inaugural season. Over three seasons in Orlando, she compiled a 39-41 (.488) overall record. A native of Chicago, Pauly played a pivotal role in establishing the foundation and early success of the organization.

“I’m so grateful to have spent the last three years in Orlando and I am thankful I had the opportunity to serve as their leader and bring the Valkyries their first championship in 2025,” Amy Pauly stated. “I’d like to thank David Forman, for bringing me on and trusting me to lead this franchise since day one. I will certainly miss all of the fun memories made here in Orlando and the ever growing love our fans showed on a nightly basis in making Addition Financial Arena truly one of the best home-court advantages in the sport. The Valkyries front office has made tremendous strides in moving the organization forward, and I know they are in great hands!”

The Orlando Valkyries remain committed to building upon the momentum and continued growth of professional volleyball in Central Florida, as well as looking forward to an exciting future both on and off the court as it continues to elevate the Valkyries brand and pursue sustained success in the community and Major League Volleyball.
